Cypress, Calif. - Cypress took on Irvine Valley for the first time on Tuesday hosting the Lasers. The Chargers fell behind early but took the lead and held off IVC for the 8-5 win. Sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez led Cypress with two doubles going 3-for-5.
Cypress fell behind early giving up four straight doubles in the second inning allowing the Lasers to jump ahead 3-0. After coming up empty in the first three innings, Cypress finally strung together some hits with back-to-back doubles from Christian Ramirez and Jonathan Hurst for Cypress’s first run of the game. Hurst would then score on a single up the middle by sophomore catcher Parker Berberet. The inning kept going after an error and an RBI double down the left field line by sophomore centerfielder Ricky Eisenberg scoring Berberet and tying the game 3-3. The tie was not enough for Cypress as freshman third baseman Dimitri DeLaFuente hit a two RBI infield single to take the two run lead.
The Chargers kept it going in the fifth. Ramirez led off with a bunt single and scored off a double in the right field gap by sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang extending the Charger lead to three runs. IVC quickly got that run back and more by driving two in at the top of the sixth to come within one, 6-5.
Eisenberg scored his second run of the game leading off the bottom of the sixth with a double. Team play scored him as a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales moved him to third and a long sacrifice fly by DeLaFuente led him home. Eisenberg would score again in the eighth walking, stealing second, and then scoring off a single up the middle by Morales for Cypress’s eighth and final run.
Sophomore Travis Garrett went to the mound in the ninth with the tree run lead and the save opportunity. Garrett allowed two runners on as the tying run approached the plate with just one out down. Garrett retired two in a row to hold IVC to five runs and earn the save.
