Grand Comeback Effort Lift Cypress to 5-0 Conference Record

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress hosted Fullerton Saturday facing the Hornets for the first time this season. The Chargers defended their undefeated conference record with a big seventh inning for the 12-6 win. Freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier led the comeback with a go-ahead grand slam.
Freshman pitcher Ray Hanson took care of business to start with three strikeouts in the first inning. He gave up a run in the second off of a series of infield singles by the Hornets leaving Cypress behind by a run early. Cypress was able to catch up in the third with a two-out rally started by back-to-back singles by sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst and sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet loaded the bases with a walk and Hurst scored off a wild pitch to tie it at one. Sophomore centerfielder Ricky Eisenberg gave Cypress the lead with a double to the right field gap for two more Charger runs and the 3-1 lead.
Fullerton waited till the sixth to come back at Cypress. The Hornet offense used a walk, three hits, and an error to score five runs and take back the lead, 6-3. Cypress made their comeback rally in the seventh. Sophomore pinch hitter Mark Hewitt singled to left and sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez reached on a fielder’s choice. Hurst, Kaupang, and Berberet put together three straight singles for three straight runs to tie it at six. Eisenberg followed with a fourth straight single to load the bases for LeVier. LeVier belted his grand slam over the right field wall giving Cypress the four run lead on one swing of the bat, 10-6.
Cypress extended their lead with two in the eighth. Ramirez and Kaupang singled and Berberet drove both in off a single up the middle for the six run lead which would hold to the end. Hanson had an effective start striking out eight batters in 5.2 innings of work. Freshman Matt Rush earned the win improving to 1-1 after 2.1 innings allowing no earned runs.
Cypress improves to 15-5 and 5-0 in conference. The Chargers will take on second place Saddleback in what will surely be a test to their first place status next. The two meet up at Saddleback on Tuesday at 2:00 pm.
