Mission Viejo, Calif. - The two undefeated teams in the Orange Empire Conference met Tuesday as Cypress took on Saddleback on the road. Saddleback remained the undefeated team while Cypress fell flat losing 9-1. Freshman third baseman Mike Barnhill scored Cypress’s only run going two-for-three on the day.
Saddleback scored first with a run in the second while Cypress kept up empty. The Chargers put runners on third in both the third and fourth but left both stranded. Meanwhile, Saddleback drilled Cypress for six runs in the fifth. Cypress was unable to make a dent until the eighth. Barnhill led off with a single and moved to second off a bunt single by sophomore center fielder Christian Ramirez. After a fielder’s choice, sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang hit an RBI fielder’s choice to score Barnhill which would be the end of Cypress’s scoring.
The Chargers were unable to figure out the Gaucho pitcher who finished a complete game. Freshman Gabriel Garcia suffered the loss falling to 3-3. He pitched the first 4.1 innings striking out four batters and allowing four earned runs. Sophomores Matt Wolfrom and Richard Hanson combined to pitch a scoreless three innings to end the game.
Cypress falls to 15-6 and 5-1 in conference in second place ending a six game win streak. The Chargers have just a day off before taking on a tough Riverside squad. Cypress will travel to take on the Tigers Thursday at 2:00 pm.
