Riverside, Calif. - Cypress traveled to Riverside Thursday to take on a tough Tiger squad. The Chargers blew out Riverside showing off their offensive power for the 20-5 win. Sophomore centerfielder Ricky Eisenberg powered the Charger offense with a homerun, a triple, and a single for three RBI and three runs scored.
The Chargers got to hitting early. Sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst walked and sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang reached on an error. Hurst scored off a single by sophomore catcher Parker Berberet and Eisenberg followed with his three RBI homerun for a quick 4-0 lead. Riverside bounced back with two in the second and third to tie it at four.
Cypress was able to double their score in the third. Berberet singled and Eisenberg walked. Freshman designated hitter Travis Garrett followed with an RBI single to score Berberet. Sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon drove in Eisenberg with a single. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales finished it up with a two RBI double as Cypress took the 8-4 lead.
Riverside made some errors in the fifth as Cypress took advantage for three more runs. Leon led off with a single and Morales reached on an error. Sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez singled to score Leon, and Berberet hit a two RBI single for Cypress’s 11th run.
Cypress piled on the runs in the sixth. Garrett led off with a double. With two outs down, Morales and Ramirez started off a rally with two straight singles as Garrett scored. Hurst doubled to score Morales and Kaupang cleared the bases with a three run homer.
The Chargers closed it out in the ninth with another four run inning. Eisenberg led off with a triple followed by an RBI double by Garrett. Freshman pinch hitter Corey LeVier followed with an RBI single. Freshman third baseman Stephen Kungl reached on an error and freshman shortstop Mike Barnhill reached on a failed fielder’s choice. With the bases loaded, freshman left fielder David Silvas singled for run number 19, and freshman catcher Matt Rush hit an rbi ground-out for Charger run number 20.
Freshman pitcher Ray Hanson earned the win improving to 5-0. He pitched 5.2 innings allowing three earned runs while striking out seven. Freshmen Matt Treybig and Tim Lu combined for three scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
Cypress has no time off as they return home for their annual non-conference matchup against Long Beach City. The two face off Friday at 1:00 pm at Cypress.
