Team Contributions Lead to 6-1 Win over Long Beach

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress hosted Long Beach Friday in their annual non-conference matchup. Cypress came up with a decisive victory 6-1 over the Vikings breaking the four year streak of one run decisions in this annual game. Sophomore right-hander Jayson Huett started Cypress off with his first start for Cypress striking out three batters in three innings and allowing no earned runs.
Cypress allowed Long Beach to get ahead first loading the bases and giving up a strikeout passed ball as they took the one run lead. The Chargers waited till the third to get the run back. Freshman third baseman Stephan Kungl led of with a double to right and reached third of a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales. Sophomore centerfielder Tyler Brady drove Kungl in with an RBI ground out tying the game at 1-1.
The Chargers quickly took the lead in the fourth. Freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier singled to right, moved to second on a fielder’s choice by sophomore left fielder Mark Hewitt, and scored off a single by sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon for the lead. Freshman right fielder Jordan Foreman hit into an RBI ground out that came up an error scoring Hewitt for the 3-1 lead.
Cypress came up with a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh for their total of six runs. Sophomore catcher Jonathan Hurst scored after walking and an RBI single by Hewitt. Morales scored after reaching on a fielder’s choice and was drove in by freshman right fielder David Silvas’s double to right center. LeVier finished it off walking, stealing second then third, and then scoring off a double to left by freshman second baseman Mike Barnhill.
Seven Chargers took the mound for Cypress. Freshman Dylan Kuhn earned his first collegiate win striking out two batters in one inning of work.
Cypress improves to 12-10 and head into the second trimester of conference. After a look at each conference team in round-robin action, Cypress stands in first place with their only loss to Saddleback. The Chargers will begin the second trimester of conference Tuesday in their first of two straight matchups against Orange Coast. Cypress defeated the Pirates 5-3 the last time around after a controversial ejection early in the game. The two meet up again Tuesday at Orange Coast at 2:00 pm.
