Cypress, Calif. - Cypress returned home Thursday to take on the Pirates in their third meet-up this season. With the season series split, Cypress could not come up with the deciding win falling 9-7 to the Pirates. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet led Cypress with two RBI going two-for-five with a homerun.
Cypress troubles started early as Cypress hit three batters, allowed two doubles and a single, and a stolen base. Orange Coast went through their entire lineup and finished the inning with five runs. The Chargers chipped into the lead with two in the first. Sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez led off with a single to right. With Ramirez on, Berberet belted a home run over the left field fence for two runs.
The Pirates added two in the second and the sixth for the commanding 9-2 lead. Cypress punched in two more in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang led off with a single to right and scored off a double to right by sophomore center fielder Ricky Eisenberg. Eisenberg then scored off an RBI single by freshman third baseman Stephan Kungl cutting the Pirate lead to five.
Cypress had their last shot in the bottom of the ninth. With an out down, Ramirez singled to right and immediately scored thanks to a double to right center by pinch hitter, freshman David Silvas putting Cypress within grand slam range. Silvas then scored off an RBI single through the left side by Kaupang. The rally kept going with Berberet hitting a single to right and then motoring all the way to third because of an outfield error as Kaupang came in to score cutting the Pirate lead to two. The rally would end there as Cypress fell two runs short in the rally.
Freshman Ray Hanson suffered his first loss of the season falling to 5-1. He allowed five earned runs in 0.2 innings. Sophomore Brent Bray pitched the bulk of the game allowing four earned runs in 5.2 innings while striking out three.
Cypress falls to 17-8 and 6-3 in conference and has a day to recover before taking on rival Santa Ana. Cypress won their first round battle 11-10. They meet up again Saturday at noon at Cypress.
