Cypress, Calif. - Cypress hosted rival Santa Ana Saturday afternoon in the second of three games in the regular conference season. After an offensive showdown in the first meeting with Cypress winning 11-10, Saturday’s face-off turned out to be a defensive battle with Santa Ana getting the best of this meeting winning 3-1. Sophomore starter Jayson Huett led Cypress with a stellar six-and-a-third innings of work striking out seven batters and allowing just one run.
Huett kept the Don offense quiet early. With runners on first and third with just one out, Huett struck out the next two batters swinging to keep Santa Ana scoreless. The Cypress offense struggled as well leaving the bases loaded in the second and scoreless. Cypress finally put a lead-off runner on in the fifth but was immediately thrown out on a double play.
Cypress finally broke the scoreless tie in the sixth. Sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst reached on an error and stole second. Sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon drove in the first run of the day with a hard hit double down the left field line as Hurst scored for the 1-0 Charger lead. Sana Ana quickly answered with a solo homerun shot at the top of the seventh tying it up again 1-1.
The Dons got up in the seventh loading the bases and bringing a run in on a sacrifice fly. With two outs down, the Dons stole home on a controversial call as Cypress was attempting a time out for their third run.
Cypress bats were not able to overcome Santa Ana’s pitcher with just one hit in the final two innings. Freshman Travis Garrett suffered the loss falling to 1-3 on the season pitching 1.2 innings allowing three earned runs. Freshman Ray Hanson closed in the ninth retiring the side in order.
Cypress falls to 18-8 and 6-4 in conference. They have a couple days off before their third and final regular OEC meeting with the Dons on Tuesday. Cypress will try to take the advantage in the series Tuesday at 2:00 pm at Cypress.
