Cypress, Calif. - Cypress traveled to Irvine Valley Thursday for a rematch against the Lasers. Both teams’ pitchers held their own but Cypress was able to score just enough for the 4-2 win. Freshman pitcher Ray Hanson led Cypress pitching 8.1 innings allowing just one earned run, six hits, and no walks while knocking out eight batters. Hanson’s win improves his record to 2-1.
Both teams had trouble hitting early on. The scoreboard would not change until the sixth when Cypress had their big inning. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales led off with a single followed by a double by sophomore center fielder Christian Ramirez. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet drove both runs in with a double. Freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier then drove in Berberet for the 3-0 lead.
Cypress added their fourth run in the eighth. Berberet singled and stole second and then reached third on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore center fielder Tyler Brady finished the play with a single scoring Berberet for the 4-0 lead.
The Chargers then just had to hold the Laser offense down. IVC rallied in the bottom of the ninth scoring two runs off three hits and an error but were stopped short of the full comeback. Freshman Matt Rush earned the save pitching for the final two outs. This was his third save this year.
Cypress improves to 19-9 and 8-4 tied for second in conference. They will take on the Lasers in their third and final regular conference matchup Saturday. The Chargers will go for the season sweep Saturday at noon at Cypress.
