Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers returned home Saturday for their third matchup against the Lasers. Cypress took the lead in the middle of the game and maintained the narrow edge for a duplicate 4-2 win over IVC. The Chargers were led by the pitching of starter, sophomore Jayson Huett. Huett earned his second win pitching six innings, striking out six batters, and allowing just one earned run.
Cypress got out of an early jam as Huett pitched himself out of a bases loaded situation striking out the Laser batter to end the first half inning. Neither team could get their offense going till the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet led off with a double followed by a single by freshman designated hitter David Silvas. Berberet scored the first run of the game off an RBI fielder’s choice by sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst for a precarious 1-0 lead.
The Chargers loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang batted in a run with an RBI fielder’s choice scoring freshman second baseman Mike Barnhill. Ramirez, who originally reached on a single, scored off an RBI ground out by Berberet stretching Cypress’s lead to three.
IVC got on the board in the seventh with a run. With two runners in scoring position and the go-ahead run at the plate, freshman Matt Rush eliminated two straight outs including a third out strikeout to get out of the inning with the lead intact.
The Lasers added another run in the eighth cutting the Charger lead to one. IVC continued to threaten in the inning with runners on second and third. Freshman Travis Garrett eliminated the final out of the half inning to strand the Laser runners and maintain the narrow lead.
The Chargers gave themselves a bit of breathing room with a two out rally thanks to a Laser error. Barnhill reached second on an outfield error and then hit third on a passed ball. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales cashed in with an infield single scoring Barnhill to stretch the lead to two. The lead held in the ninth as Garrett earned the save, his fifth this season.
Cypress improves to 20-9 and 9-4 in conference. The Chargers have a few days off before starting a two game series against Golden West. Cypress defeated the Rustlers 9-8 earlier in the season. They face off again Tuesday at 2:00 pm at Golden West.
