Huntington Beach, Calif. - Cypress began a two game series against Golden West Tuesday after defeating the Rustlers earlier this season 9-8. The Chargers had a bigger buffer in Tuesday’s win defeating GWC 8-1. The Chargers were led by the pitching of freshman starter Gabriel Garcia who pitched eight innings allowing no earned runs and striking out eight batters. Garcia allowed just five singles and one walk.
The Chargers capitalized on Rustler errors for their first few runs. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang singled followed by an outfield error hit into by sophomore catcher Parker Berberet allowing Kaupang to score. Berberet then scored from third on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead in the first.
Freshman second baseman Mike Barnhill reached on an error and advanced to second and then third. Freshman designated hitter David Silvas scored Barnhill with an RBI fielder’s choice for the three run lead in the third.
Cypress scored their final unearned run in the fourth. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales walked and eventually scored on another error for the 4-0 lead. Cypress put together their big inning in the ninth. Sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon walked and stole second. Kaupang drove in Leon with a double. Berberet followed with a walk and freshman Corey LeVier singled to load the bases. Sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst had an RBI ground out and freshman third baseman Stephan Kungl singled for two more runs to end Cypress’s scoring at eight runs.
Cypress improves to 21-9 and 10-4 in conference. They take on the Rustlers again Thursday at home at 2:00 pm.
