Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers finished their conference series against the Rustlers Thursday afternoon. Cypress completed the sweep and finished GWC off 8-3 for their fifth straight win. Orange Coast’s loss to Santa Ana puts Cypress a game closer to first with Cypress just one game behind the Pirates. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales led Cypress with a perfect three-for-three game with a run scored.
Cypress got it going with a two-out rally in the first. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang hammered a single to left followed by a well placed bunt single by sophomore catcher Parker Berberet. Freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier produced the third straight single scoring Kaupang. Sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst loaded the bases with a walk and freshman third baseman Dimitri DeLaFuente cashed in with a double to left center for Cypress’s fourth run of the inning.
Golden West came back with a run off a bases loaded balk to get on the board with a run. Another two-out rally in the second garnered another Charger run. Morales led off with a single. After an out, sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon singled for runners on the corners. After the second out, Berberet hit a single down the left field line to score Morales. LeVier loaded the bases with a walk and Hurst capitalized with a single to right scoring two.
The Rustlers added a run in the fifth and Cypress got it right back with Berberet’s solo homerun in the sixth for the 8-3 lead. Freshman Ray Hanson earned the win improving to 7-1. Hanson allowed two earned runs in five innings while striking out six. Freshman Matt Rush pitched the next 2.2 innings striking out three batters and freshman Travis Garrett closed in the last 1.1 innings allowing no runs.
Cypress improves to 22-9 and 11-4 in conference. The Chargers take a week off conference action as they head North for their annual spring break trip. They start with Cuesta at Cuesta Tuesday at 2:00 pm.
