Cypress, Calif. - Cypress returned to conference play Tuesday kicking it off at Fullerton against the Hornets. The teams battled to four extra innings before Cypress broke the tie in the 13th inning to win 6-5. Sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez played hero twice driving in the game saving run in the ninth and the game winning run in the 13th inning.
Fullerton struck first taking a 2-0 lead in the first. Cypress got on the board in the second. Freshman designated hitter David Silvas walked, reached second off a single, and then scored off a double by sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon cutting the Hornet lead to one.
The Hornets dug in for three in the seventh putting Cypress behind by four runs giving Cypress a lot of room to make up in the final two innings. The Cypress bats stepped up with three runs in the eighth. Ramirez led off with a walk and was followed by a walk by sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang. Freshman Jordan Foreman came in to run for Kaupang. Both runners moved into scoring position off a wild pitch and both scored off a single up the middle by Silvas. Silvas reached second on a wild pitch and then scored thanks to a single by freshman third baseman Dimitri DeLaFuente.
With Cypress down a run in the top of the ninth, Cypress had their last shot. Sophomore centerfielder Ricky Eisenberg led off with a walk and reached second on a sac bunt. Ramirez came through to tie it up with a double to right.
The teams were locked in a 5-5 tie through the next three-and-a-half innings. Freshman Travis Garrett held the Hornet bats silent pitching four hitless innings and striking out five batters allowing just one walk. While Garrett did his part defensively, Cypress’s offense finally came through in the 13th inning. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales reached on a fielder’s choice and Ramirez doubled down the right field line for the sixth and final Cypress run.
Garrett earned the win improving to 3-2. Freshman Gabriel Garcia pitched the first 6.1 innings striking out four batters. Freshman Matt Rush pitched 2.2 innings allowing no runs and striking out four.
Cypress improves to 24-11 and 12-4 in conference. They have a day off before hosting the Hornets in their third matchup this season. The two will face off Thursday at Cypress at 2:00 pm.
