Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers faced fourth place Saddleback Saturday afternoon hoping to notch a win against the Gauchos. The teams went back and forth necessitating an extra inning until Saddleback edged out Cypress again 11-10. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet led the Chargers with a two-run homerun in the eighth.
Cypress gave up a run in the second but scored five of their own to make up for it. Freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier led off with a double. Two outs later, freshman third baseman Dimitri DeLeFuente walked followed by an RBI single by freshman second baseman Mike Barnhill to tie the game. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales walked to load the bases and sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez doubled for two runs. An error would score Ramirez and Morales for the 5-1 Charger lead.
The Chargers piled on three more in the fourth to take a commanding lead. Ramirez led off with a bunt single and stole second. Freshman left fielder David Silvas and LeVier both walked to load the bases and sophomore first baseman Jonathan Hurst scored all three with a double.
The seven run lead would vanish quickly for Cypress as Saddleback rallied with four in the sixth and three in the seventh tying the game at 8-8. Berberet’s homerun in the eight would add two more runs for Cypress and gave the Chargers the lead back 10-8.
Saddleback refused to go away producing a two-run homerun of their own in the top of the ninth to tie the game at ten and force extra innings. Cypress bats went quiet and the Gauchos were able to convert at the top of the tenth to take the one run lead. Cypress batters went down in order in the bottom of the inning as Saddleback returned home with the win.
Freshman Travis Garrett suffered the loss falling to 3-3. He allowed two earned runs in 1.2 innings. Freshman Jayson Huett started allowing five earned runs in 5.1 innings and striking out six batters.
Cypress falls to 25-12 and 13-5 in conference. They are one game behind first place Orange Coast. The top four teams in the Orange Empire Conference are in a tight competition as conference winds down as there is just one game separating each team. Cypress will try to prevent a season sweep by the Gauchos Tuesday as they travel back to Saddleback for their third game. The two will meet up Tuesday at Saddleback at 2:00 pm.
