Fullerton, Calif. - The Chargers played their second-to-last conference game Thursday taking on Fullerton in the OEC Mini-Tournament. Cypress fell behind but blew the game open in the sixth with eleven runs for the 17-9 win. First place teams Santa Ana and Orange Coast both won today as well leaving Cypress a game behind both with just one game remaining. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang was one of five Chargers today with multiple RBI collecting three on the day. Kaupang went three-for-five with a homerun and two runs scored.
Cypress started the scoring with a couple runs in the first. Freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier produced a bases loaded walk and sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon hit an RBI sacrifice bunt for the 2-0 lead.
While the Charger scoring stopped, Fullerton got going taking a 5-2 lead after four innings. Cypress cut into the lead in the fifth with a run. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet led off with a double and then scored off a single by freshman third baseman Stephan Kungl.
Cypress blew it open in the sixth with eleven runs almost going around the order twice. After putting two runners on, Kaupang hit an RBI single. Berberet loaded the bases with a walk followed by another RBI walk by LeVier. Freshman centerfielder David Silvas drove in a run with a single. Kungl suffered the first out of the inning but drove in a run on the way with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez walked in another run followed by a three run double to left center by sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst. Kaupang showed no mercy following with a two run homerun and the 14-5 lead.
The Chargers scored again in the seventh off an error and added their final two in the ninth. Freshman shortstop Jonathan Morales put up an RBI single followed by an RBI double by sophomore pinch hitter Tyler Brady.
Sophomore Jayson Huett earned the win striking out five in six innings to improve to 3-1. Sophomore Colby Hyatt was a defensive highlight allowing just one hit and no walks in 1.1 innings of work.
Cypress improves to 28-14 and 16-7 in conference one game behind Santa Ana and Orange Coast. In order for Cypress to grab a share of first in their final game of the regular season, Cypress must defeat Santa Ana and hope for OCC to lose to Saddleback. The Chargers will attempt this feat tomorrow at 2:00 pm at Cypress.
