Cypress, Calif. - Playoffs began Friday as Cypress hosted Allan Hancock in game one of the first round of regionals. The Chargers won their second of three games against the Bulldogs this year 10-3. The Chargers were led by the pitching of freshman Ray Hanson who picked up his tenth win of the year. Hanson pitched for seven innings allowing two earned runs while striking out five.
Cypress pushed for a couple runs in the first on a two out rally. Sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez led off with a walk. Two outs later, sophomore catcher Parker Berberet walked followed by a double to left center by freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier to score both runs for the 2-0 lead.
Another two-out rally in the third garnered a run for Cypress. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang led off with a walk. Two outs later, Kaupang motored home off an RBI double to left center by sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon.
The Chargers piled on a few more in the fifth. Kaupang led off with a single followed by a single by LeVier. Leon drove in a run on his single and freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales’s infield single scored two.
More runs poured in in the seventh. Sophomore Ricky Eisenberg and freshman third baseman Stephan Kungl led off with singles. Morales drove in Eisenberg with a single and Ramirez cleared the bases with a triple to right for two more. Sophomore left fielder Tyler Brady produced an RBI ground-out for the tenth and final run.
The Chargers improve to 30-14 and must defeat the Bulldogs one more time to reach the second round of playoffs. The two face off again at 11:00 am tomorrow at Cypress. If AHC forces a third game, it will occur that same afternoon.
