Chargers Finish off the Bulldogs, Move on to Super Regionals

Final Stats

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress needed one more win Sunday to earn the right to move on to the Super Regionals. The Chargers made it a one-and-done day with an 11-3 win over Allan Hancock. Cypress was led by freshman left hander Gabriel Garcia who completed 7.2 innings allowing just two hits. He racked up six strikeouts along the way.

Cypress got on the board in the second thanks to a couple of doubles. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet led off with a single and stole second. Sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon drove in the first run of the day with a stand-up double to left. Freshman third baseman Stephan Kungl followed with a double in the same spot scoring Leon for a 2-0 lead.

Another double in that same spot scored the third Charger run in the fourth. After an error, freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales hit the stand-up double scoring Kungl for the 3-0 lead.

The Chargers mixed it up in the fourth. Sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst singled to right and sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang hit his team leading 11th homerun of the season to score two more.

Kaupang drove in the next Charger run with a double off the centerfield wall in the top of the seventh. Kaupang then tagged up and scored thanks to a sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier.

Morales scored a run in the eighth reaching on a fielder’s choice and scored off an RBI single by Kaupang in the eighth for an 8-0 lead.

Cypress topped it off in the ninth. Freshman pitcher Dimitri DeLaFuente led off with a single followed by a walk by freshman pinch hitter Mark Hewitta. Morales then doubled to score DeLaFuente. An outfield error scored two more for the 11-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Matt Wolfrom, and freshman Matt Rush finished in the ninth allowing three unearned runs.

Cypress improves to 31-14 and have the week to prepare for Super Regionals for a double elimination tournament of four teams to determine who makes it to the State Championships. Cypress will head to either Orange Coast and will take on the seventh seed Mt. San Jacinto with action starting Friday.
