Two Straight Losses End the Charger 2009 Season

Costa Mesa, Calif. - Cypress headed into day two of Super Regional action Saturday taking on conference rival Orange Coast. After losing to the Pirates 11-3, Cypress got edged out 10-9 by Mt. San Jacinto in the afternoon ending their season. Cypress allowed OCC to have a ten run inning and then Mt. San Jac avenged their earlier loss to Cypress.

Cypress and Orange Coast battled in a close game with Cypress tying it up at 1-1 after the top of the fifth. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales scored after reaching on a two-out double. It fell apart for the Chargers in the bottom of the fifth allowing the Pirates to score ten runs burying Cypress in a ten run deficit.

The Chargers scored two more runs including an RBI double by sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon but could not get close to the Pirate score losing by eight runs.

Freshman Gabriel Garcia (5-6) suffered the loss for Cypress allowing seven earned runs.

Cypress was pushed to the elimination bracket facing a rematch against Mt. San Jacinto in the evening. The Chargers struck first with a solo homerun by sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez. Mt. San Jacinto jumped ahead in the second with five runs giving Cypress a comeback task.

The Chargers started the comeback in the third with two runs including a solo homerun by sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang. Cypress then evened the score with two runs in the fourth.

Mt. San Jac took the lead back with a run in the fifth before Cypress took their second lead of the game with four runs in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally. Freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier started it off with a homerun to center. Three walks, a couple wild pitches, and two singles later, and Cypress was up 9-6.

The lead would not last as Mt. San Jac scored three runs to tie it up at 9-9. They then scored what would become the deciding run in the eighth. Cypress had their last shot in the top of the ninth. The Chargers put runners on first and second but stranded them there to end the game.

Freshman Matt Rush (1-3) pitched the final seven innings striking out four batters.

Cypress finishes their season 32-15 in their 17th straight year competing in the Super Regionals.
