February 4, 2010

Final Stats

Cypress, Calif. - The 2010 baseball season began Thursday with Cypress hosting College of the Desert in the first of three straight games for the Chargers. The Charger defense backed up the offense in a solid 4-1 win over Desert. Sophomore second baseman DC Legg provided the highlight for Cypress with a three-run homerun going two-for-four on the day.

The Roadrunners struck first and were able to advance a runner to score after a walk, stolen base, wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly taking the 1-0 lead in their first shot at bat. Cypress put a man on third in the first but was unable to score ending the first inning behind by a run.

After coming up blank for the first third, Cypress got on the board in the fourth. Sophomore left fielder Matt Avery led it off with a single to left and was thrown out on a fielder’s choice by sophomore third baseman Stephan Kungl. Kungl reached second off a single to left by sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales and sophomore second baseman DC Legg produced his first hit as a Charger with a homerun over the left field wall giving Cypress the 3-1 lead.

Cypress was able to score again in the seventh. Freshman catcher Tanner Perkins led off with a double to right center and advanced to third on a ground out. Sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman hit a fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt that failed to throw out Perkins at the plate giving Cypress their fourth run.

The Charger bullpen held Desert to just three hits on the day. Sophomore starter Ray Hanson pitched the first six innings to earn the win. He allowed just two hits not allowing a hit till the fourth. Sophomore pitcher Gabriel Garcia followed in the next two innings striking out five in a row over the 7th and 8th. Sophomore Travis Garrett closed in the ninth putting the Desert batters down in order.

Cypress (1-0) will head to College of the Desert tomorrow to take on Chaffey at 5:00 pm.
