Chargers Score Early to Overtake Chaffey

Joey Boney Boney had 3 RBI Friday afternoon.
Cypress starts the season with two straight wins.

February 5, 2010

Final Stats

Palm Desert, Calif. - Cypress traveled to Desert Friday for their second game of the season to take on Chaffey on the neutral field. The chargers scored a handful of runs early and kept the Panthers from stringing together hits on the way to the 8-3 win. Freshman second baseman Joey Boney led the Chargers with three RBI and two runs scored.

After two scoreless innings, Cypress determined the outcome of the game in the third with five runs. After a walk and a single with one out down, Boney hit an RBI single to break the scoreless tie. Sophomore third baseman DC Legg followed with an RBI single for his fourth RBI of the season. Sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe drove in Boney from third with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore right fielder David Silvas hit an RBI double for the fourth run and then later scored off an error for the 5-0 lead.

The Panthers got on the board with a run in the fourth but Cypress continued to hit. With two runners in scoring position, Boney hit a two RBI single. After reaching third off a walk and a Silvas single, Boney scored the third run in the inning off a Chaffey error giving Cypress a commanding 8-1 lead.

Chaffey was able to score a couple more times but Cypress’s early lead was enough to hold on for the five run win. Sophomore starter Thomas Hoenshell earned the win pitching 6.1 innings striking out five batters and allowing just one earned run.

Cypress (2-0) has no time off as they take on host Desert for the second time this season. The Chargers defeated the Roadrunners in their home opener on Thursday 4-1. The two face off again at College of the Desert at 1:00 pm Saturday.
