Chargers Pummeled in Rematch against Desert

Palm Desert, Calif. - Cypress took on Desert Saturday in a quick rematch against the Roadrunners after defeating Desert 4-1 in the season opener. The fortunes turned for the teams Saturday as Cypress was held to just one run this time around in the 9-1 loss. Sophomore left fielder Matt Avery led the Chargers with two doubles and a single but was unable to score.
After giving up three runs already to Desert, Cypress was able to score their first and only run in the fourth. With two outs down, Sophomore centerfielder Erik Hempe hit a solo homerun to put Cypress on the board. Desert would continue to score though as Cypress’s offense was stymied.
Freshman starter Vince Payne suffered the loss pitching 3.2 innings, striking out four batters, and allowing four earned runs. Sophomore Stephan Kungl moved from third base to the mound for 2.1 innings allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out three.
Cypress (2-1) has a couple days off before returning home for a four game home stand. Cypress will start it off Tuesday taking on East LA at 2:00 pm.
