Cypress, Calif. - Cypress got back into action Friday after a rain-out earlier in the week. The Chargers took on Merced in the first of two straight against the Blue Devils and came out on top 4-2. Sophomore pitcher Travis Garrett sealed the win for the Chargers with a save pitching the final 1.1 innings allowing no hits, no walks, and striking out two.
The Blue Devils struck first with a run in both the third and the fourth putting Cypress behind two. The Chargers were able to produce two doubles but could not back them up until the fourth inning. Sophomore designated hitter Corey Levier led it off with a double. Two outs later and with LeVier still at second, sophomore Justin McGuire came off the bench to pinch hit and was clutch singling to center allowing LeVier to score for Cypress’s first run of the day.
Cypress was patient and got ahead in the seventh. Sophomore left fielder Matt Avery led off with a walk. After a hit batter, another walk, and two outs, sophomore first baseman Ben Waldrip singled to right field to score Avery and sophomore centerfielder David Silvas for the 3-2 lead. With the bases loaded again, sophomore right fielder Erik Hempe took advantage of a wild pitch to score another for Cypress. From there, the Charger defense held on the way to the 4-2 win.
Sophomore right-hander Ray Hanson started for Cypress with 6.2 innings of work striking out 11 batters. Sophomore Gabe Garcia earned the win pitching one inning, striking out one, and allowing one hit.
Cypress (3-1) will face an immediate rematch against the Central Valley Conference Champs tomorrow at noon at Cypress.
