Cypress, Calif. - Cypress took on Merced for the second straight day Saturday closing out the two game series. After falling behind early again, Cypress put together two big innings on the way to the 13-2 win. Sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales led Cypress with two doubles for four RBI and two runs scored while also making some key defensive plays.
Merced took the lead first again with a two-run second inning. Cypress came right back at the Blue Devils in the bottom of the second with some help from the Blue Devil defense. Sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier led it off with a single to right. After a walk, a wild pitch and two outs, with runners on second and third, sophomore third baseman Stephan Kungl hit into an infield error as LeVier and sophomore center fielder Jordan Foreman scored. Cypress decided to string together hits from there as Morales doubled to right center for two RBI followed by a two run homerun by sophomore right fielder Matt Avery for the fifth unearned run and the 5-2 lead.
Cypress added a run each in the sixth and the seventh. In the sixth, with two outs down, sophomore right fielder Erik Hempe scored off an RBI single down the left field line from Levier. In the seventh inning, after reaching third, Foreman beat out the throw racing home to score after a fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt from Kungl.
The Chargers cleared the bench in the eighth and added some more runs while collecting six hits. With Hempe on second, freshman second baseman Joey Boney hit into a failed double play allowing Hempe to score all the way from first. Foreman followed with an RBI single to score Boney next. Two singles later, Morales doubled to score Foreman and freshman catcher Tanner Perkins. Avery followed with another double to score Kungl and Morales as Cypress stretched the lead to a commanding 13-2 lead.
Sophomore starter Thomas Hoenshell earned the win improving to 2-0. Hoenshell pitched the first 6.1 innings striking out seven.
Cypress (4-1) has a couple days off before returning home to play a rescheduled game against East LA. The teams tried to play last week going four-and-a-half innings to a 2-2 tie before the game was called due to rain. The teams will start over again Tuesday at Cypress at 2:00 pm.
