Cypress, Calif. - Cypress took on East LA for the second time this year after their first meeting was cut off short due to weather. The two started all over again Tuesday afternoon and Cypress controlled the pace throughout on the way to the 9-3 win. Sophomore left fielder Matt Avery led the Charger offense with two homeruns and a double collecting three RBI and two runs scored.
The Charger bats caught fire early driving in a handful of runs in the first. Avery led the whole thing off with a solo homerun. Sophomore second baseman DC Legg followed with a double and then scored after a balk and an RBI single by sophomore centerfielder David Silvas. Silvas was immediately followed by a solo homerun by sophomore right fielder Erik Hempe for the 3-0 Charger lead after one.
Avery got it going again in the second with his second homerun scoring himself and sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales to get ahead by five. A solo homerun in the third by sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier would then make it 6-0 for Cypress.
Freshman starter Vince Payne got himself into a jam in the fifth loading the bases. Payne produced a strikeout to maintain the shutout as he closed out his fifth inning of work for the win.
The scoring continued in the fifth after an inning off of scoring. Hempe drove in two more with a double to right center to score Legg and Silvas for an eight run lead. Cypress cleared the bench in the eighth and produced their eighth and final run. Freshman third baseman Bryan Aanderud doubled and scored off of an RBI single by freshman left fielder Kyle Henke.
East LA broke the shutout in the ninth with three runs but it was not enough to catch Cypress. Payne earned his first collegiate win with six strikeouts allowing just three hits. Freshmen Travis Pitcher, Connor Haddock, and sophomore Dylan Kuhn combined to pitch the final four innings.
Cypress (5-1) has no time off as they head into action tomorrow to host Mt. Sac at home at 2:00 pm.
