Las Vegas, Nev. - The last time Cypress defeated Southern Nevada, they actually lost. In 2006, the Chargers lost 1-0 to the Coyotes before CSN had to forfeit. Sophomore starter Ray Hanson earned the win for Cypress going six innings and allowing just one earned run to improve to 2-0.
Cypress put together all their runs towards the beginning of the game putting the Coyotes on their heels with five runs in the first inning taking advantage of CSN errors. Four errors scored a run and loaded the bases. Sophomore first baseman Ben Waldrip drove in the first two of four RBI on the day with a single to center. Sophomore third baseman Stephan Kungl followed with an RBI ground out and then an RBI single up the middle by sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente.
The Chargers added three runs in the second. Sophomore left fielder Matt Avery, sophomore second baseman DC Legg, and sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier started it out with three straight singles. An error would score Avery and Legg while LeVier scored off an RBI ground out by sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman.
While Hanson kept the Coyotes scoreless, Cypress added another in the third. Legg hit an RBI double down the left field line scoring sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales who reached on a single. Another two runs came for Cypress in the fourth. Waldrip picked up his third RBI with a single scoring sophomore right fielder Erik Hempe. DeLaFuente brought Waldrip home with a double. The final run for Cypress came in the fifth. Waldrip picked up his final RBI scoring LeVier who reached on a single.
Just as the Cypress offense cooled down, the bullpen was tested with Southern Nevada’s offense. The Coyotes crept closer with a handful of runs in the late innings. CSN ran out of innings to catch up as Cypress finished with the five run win.
