Errors Make Cypress’s Four Run Lead Disappear in Tenth Inning Loss

Las Vegas, Nev. - Cypress finished their trip to Las Vegas Saturday taking on national powerhouse Chipola. The Chargers gave up a big lead and made five costly errors in an 8-7 tenth inning loss. Sophomore third baseman DC Legg led Cypress with two RBI and a homerun.
Chipola scored first with a run in the second but Cypress quickly surpassed the Indians with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore first baseman Ben Waldrip drove in a run with an RBi single followed by an RBI sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman Joey Boney. Cypress extended their lead in the third. Sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman scored after reaching on a single, advancing on a wild pitch and then a sacrifice bunt, and then scoring on a sacrifice fly by sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe.
The middle innings garnered two more runs for the Chargers. Legg hit his solo homerun in the fifth followed by a solo homerun by sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales giving Cypress a 4-1 lead.
The lead would slip away from there due to a string of Charger errors. Chipola caught up and took the lead with five unearned runs in the seventh taking a 5-4 lead over Cypress. Cypress quickly evened the score with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Hempe walked and then scored off of an RBI double to right by sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier. Chipola kept pace with a run in the eighth and Cypress answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore left fielder Matt Avery came off the bench to single, advance on a balk and then a passed ball, and score off a sacrifice bunt by Legg tying it up 7-7.
A scoreless ninth inning would force an extra inning, Cypress’s first of the year. Chipola scored their first earned run of the game with a homerun that the Chargers could not answer ending the game with Cypress’s second loss of the year.
Sophomore starter Thomas Hoenshell pitched the first 6.2 innings striking out nine and allowing no earned runs. Sophomore closer Travis Garrett suffered the loss falling to 0-1.
Cypress (7-2) returns to California and will host three straight in preparation for the start of Conference. They will start with Palomar Tuesday at Cypress at 2:00 pm.
