Cypress, Calif. - After rescheduling their game to Sunday due to the rain on Saturday, Cypress took on Allan Hancock again hoping to avenge their loss Thursday to the Bulldogs. The Chargers did just that making a statement with a 14-1 win. Sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales led Cypress defensively and offensively with a single, a double, and a homerun for two RBI and three runs scored.
After allowing the Bulldogs to get ahead again with a run in the second, Cypress finally strung together hits for a big third inning. Sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman started it off with a bunt single sliding safely into first. Morales followed with an RBI double. Sophomore third baseman DC Legg scored Morales with an RBI single next. Freshman first baseman Bryan Aanderud, sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe, and sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente added three more RBI singles. Sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier picked up a sacrifice fly along the way and Cypress found themselves up 6-1 after three.
Cypress continued to punish the Bulldog bullpen with four straight singles in the fourth for three runs including an RBI single by sophomore right fielder David Silvas another RBI single from Aanderud. Legg scored on a passed ball for the eight run lead.
Three homeruns in the sixth inning by Morales, Hempe, and DeLaFuente piled on five runs in the sixth extending the lead to 14-1.
The Charger bullpen held AHC to no earned runs. Starter sophomore Thomas Hoenshell earned the win improving to 3-0. He pitched five innings with four strikeouts. Relievers sophomore Stephan Kungl, and freshmen Cameron Tanseco, Connor Haddock, and Travis Pitcher combined for four scoreless innings.
Cypress (8-4) end pre-conference play on the right foot as they prepare for another season of tough Orange Empire Conference competition. Cypress will start with Golden West on Tuesday. The Rustlers are 8-3 coming off of a one run loss to LA Mission. The teams will open conference Tuesday at Golden West at 2:00 pm.
