Chargers Shut out the Lasers

Irvine, Calif. - Cypress traveled to Irvine Valley Thursday for their second conference game of the year to take on the Lasers. The Chargers made a statement with a convincing 8-0 win over IVC for their second conference win. Sophomore pitcher Thomas Hoenshell earned the win pitching 7.2 scoreless innings allowing just two hits and striking out five.
The Chargers got the scoring going in the second with a two-out rally. After walking and stealing a base, sophomore right fielder Erik Hempe scored off a double to right center by sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente. DeLaFuente immediately scored next thanks to an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Stephan Kungl for a 2-0 win after two.
Cypress chipped in an unearned run in the third. Freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud picked up the RBI single scoring sophomore second baseman DC Legg. Two more runs came in the fourth for Cypress to get ahead 5-0. DeLaFuente and Kungl scored off a sacrifice fly by sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman and an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales.
The steady scoring continued in the fifth with another two Charger runs. Sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier picked up two RBI in his first at-bat to score Hempe and DeLaFuente as DeLaFuente scored his third run of the day.
Cypress took a few innings off and closed it out with a run in the ninth. Sophomore right fielder Matt Avery doubled and scored a couple batters later thanks to Hempe’s RBI single.
Hoenshell improved to 4-0 with the win. Sophomores Matt Rush and Dylan Kuhn combined for the final 1.1 scoreless innings allowing just one hit.
Cypress (10-4, 2-0) remains on the road for their third conference game. The Chargers will take on the Hornets Saturday at noon at Fullerton.
