Chargers Pick Up Fourth Straight at Fullerton

Fullerton, Calif. - Cypress went on their third straight road game Saturday afternoon for the third conference game. The Chargers remained perfect in conference with a 13-8 win for their fourth straight win. Cypress improves to 3-0 and is tied with Riverside for first in conference. Sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente led Cypress over the Hornets with five RBI with three runs scored and a homerun.
The Charger offense had a running start with five runs in the first. Sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales started it off with a triple and scored off an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier. LeVier stole a base and scored off an RBI. DeLaFuente capped off the inning with a three-run homerun giving Cypress a commanding 5-0 lead.
Fullerton got on the board with a run in the second but Cypress matched with one of their own in the third. Sophomore first baseman Ben Waldrip drove in the run with a triple.
The Hornets got their offense going in the middle innings as the Charger bats went silent ending the sixth inning in a 6-6 tie. Cypress got right back to their offense in the seventh with another big five run inning. With the bases loaded, sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe bat in a run with a single followed by an RBI walk by DeLaFuente. With the bases still loaded, sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman drove in two runs with a double and sophomore right fielder Matt Avery chipped in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Cypress capped off their scoring in the eighth with two insurance runs off a two-out rally. Freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud and Hempe picked up back-to-back doubles for a run. Hempe then scored off a DeLeFuente single for the 13th Charger run.
Sophomore pitcher Matt Rush (1-0) earned the win pitching 2.1 innings in relief allowing one earned run and striking out four. Sophomore Gabe Garcia started with the first 5.1 innings picking up five strikeouts.
Cypress (11-4, 3-0) will return home for three straight starting with Riverside Tuesday in a showdown between the two first place teams. The two will face off Tuesday at Cypress at 2:00 pm.
