Cypress, Calif. - The top two teams in conference faced off Tuesday afternoon as Riverside visited Cypress with first place on the line. Cypress emerged as the clear leader defeating the Tigers 12-5 to take sole possession of first place in the Orange Empire Conference at 4-0. Sophomore third baseman DC Legg led Cypress with five RBI and was a triple short of the cycle.
The Charger offense started early. Sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman led off with a single through the right side and moved to third off a speedy double by sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales. A Tiger wild pitch scored Cypress’s first run as Foreman hit home. Legg added another with a single to right to score Morales. A hit batter and a walk loaded the bases and Cypress suffered its first out thanks to a runner’s interference call. With the bases loaded, sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier hit a sacrifice fly for Cypress’s third run and the 3-0 lead after one.
Cypress picked up another in the third. Sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe drew his second walk of the day and then stole second and then third. LeVier drove him in with a double down the rightfield line for Cypress’s fourth run.
The Tigers got on the board in the fourth after two walks and a single. With two runners in scoring position, Morales prevented more damage catching a liner and making a double play to escape the inning with the lead.
The Chargers added an insurance run in the fifth after Legg made it through a hard-fought at-bat for a solo home run over the centerfield fence. The runs kept coming in the sixth. After loading the bases, Legg came through again driving in all three with a double to right giving Cypress a commanding 8-1 lead.
The Tigers tried to keep pace chipping in two runs in the seventh. Cypress refused to give any ground turning in four more runs in the seventh. Hempe doubled and scored off a single by sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente. Sophomore center fielder David Silvas came off the bench to drive in DeLaFuente, and Morales drove in two more with his second double of the day.
Sophomore Ray Hanson earned the win striking out seven in 6.1 innings to improve to 4-0. He allowed just three hits.
Cypress (12-4, 4-0) has just a day off to prepare for archrival Santa Ana Thursday. The two will meet for the first time this season Thursday at Cypress at 2:00 pm.
