Cypress, Calif. - Two 2009 OEC co-Champions faced off as Cypress hosted arch-rival Santa Ana Thursday for the first time this season. The much-anticipated face-off started competitively as expected until Cypress broke free in the middle innings on the way to a 19-5 rout. Sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe led the Chargers offensively with five RBI on the day.
Santa Ana got on the board first with a solo homerun in the first. Cypress answered with two unearned runs in the second. After an error, fielder’s choice, and a single, Hempe drove in two with a single for the 2-1 Charger lead.
The Dons picked up another solo homerun in the second to tie it up and Cypress waited till the third to get ahead again. With two runners on, Hempe came through again with another two RBI single and the 4-2 Charger lead.
The competitive pace changed dramatically in the fifth Sophomores DC Legg and Corey LeVier started it out hitting back-to-back singles to lead off. Hempe followed with his fifth RBI of the day off an error. The homerun derby began here. Sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente brought everyone home with a three-run homerun. He was immediately followed by homeruns by sophomore David Silvas and freshman Tanner Perkins for back-to-back-to-back homeruns. It got heated from there as sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman was hit by a pitch after the homeruns. Foreman stole second and hit third after a bad throw. Freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud marked the first out of the inning but not without scoring a run with a sacrifice fly scoring Foreman. After batting around the order and loading the bases DeLaFuente scored the eighth and final run in the inning for the 12-2 lead.
A seven run sixth inning drove the nail in the coffin. After quickly loading the bases, sophomore first baseman Stephan Kungl scored off a wild pitch. Sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales picked up the runner on third with a sacrifice fly. Legg followed up with an RBI single and sophomore left fielder Justin McGuire hit the second sacrifice fly of the inning. Two batters later, Silvas collected his second and third RBI of the day with a double to center. Two batters later, Foreman drove in the seventh and final run of the inning after six hits.
Sophomore starter Thomas Hoenshell earned the win striking out five batters and improving to 5-0. Sophomore Dylan Kuhn and freshman Jared Wilson combined for two scoreless innings.
Cypress (13-4, 5-0) has no time to celebrate as they host Saddleback tomorrow. The two will face off for the first time this season Friday at 2:00 pm at Cypress.
