Costa Mesa, Calif. - Cypress traveled to Orange Coast Tuesday afternoon to close out the first third of conference. The two defending OEC co-champs faced off and Orange Coast came out on top as Cypress blew a 7-0 lead to lose 10-8. Freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud led Cypress with three RBI.
The Chargers put together a big first inning to jump ahead. With the bases loaded, sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente brought all three home with a double to center. Aanderud followed up by driving DeLaFuente home with an RBI single giving Cypress the 4-0 lead.
DeLaFuente doubled again in the third and then scored off an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier for the fifth unanswered Charger run. Cypress extended its lead in the fourth with two more runs. With two runners on base, Aanderud picked up his second and third RBI giving Cypress the 7-0 lead.
It fell apart from there for Cypress as Orange Coast turned on its offense in the bottom of the fourth with five runs. The Chargers attempted to create more of a buffer as sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman drove in Cypress’s eighth run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Orange Coast matched the run with its own in the bottom of the fifth and then exploded with three more in the sixth taking the lead 9-8. The Charger bats went silent as Orange Coast scored one more in the two run Charger loss.
Sophomore Gabriel Garcia suffered the loss falling to 2-2 on the season. Sophomore starter Ray Hanson pitched the first five innings allowing eight earned runs and striking out six.
Cypress (13-6, 5-2) has a day off before beginning the two game series section of conference starting with Golden West. Cypress defeated Golden West 7-4 earlier this season. The two meet again Thursday at Cypress at 2:00 pm.
