Cypress, Calif. - Cypress headed into a rematch against Golden West Thursday hoping to bounce back after two straight close losses. The Chargers could not shake the losses falling in their third straight to Golden West 10-5. Cypress sprinkled some runs throughout the game but were unable to string enough together. Sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier was a bright spot for Cypress with a two-run homerun.
Golden West struck first with a run in the top of the first and Cypress answered with two. With two men on, freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud doubled to bring in both runners and take the lead. Sophomore first baseman Ben Waldrip scored all on his in the second doubling, reaching third on a wild pitch, and then home in the same play after an error for the 3-1 lead.
Golden West erased the lead quickly with a two-run homerun in the third to tie it up and then scored off a Charger error in the fourth to take the lead. The Rustlers continued to score a couple in the middle innings and then blew the game open in the seventh batting around the order for five runs.
Cypress attempted to mount a rally in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales led off with a single and LeVier homered for two Charger runs. Aanderud followed with a single but would be stranded there as Cypress’s hitting was done for the day.
Sophomore starter Thomas Hoenshell suffered his first loss of the season falling to 5-1 allowing eight earned runs and striking out three in 6.1 innings. Freshman Vince Payne closed in the final two innings striking out two and allowing no hits.
Cypress (13-7, 5-3) will attempt to avenge this loss Saturday against Golden West again. The two will meet Saturday at Golden West at noon.
