Cypress Snaps Losing Streak in Decisive Win

Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers returned home Tuesday after suffering a discouraging one-run loss at Golden West due to errors. Cypress needed a win after dropping four straight games and found just that in an easy 15-4 win over Irvine Valley. Sophomore right fielder Matt Avery led Cypress picking up three hits including two homeruns for five RBI on the day.
The Chargers looked like themselves again in the first putting down IVC in order in the first and then leading off with a solo homerun by sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman. IVC evened the score in the third thanks to a Charger error tying it up 1-1.
Cypress took back the lead in the bottom of the third chipping in a few runs. Sophomore first baseman Stephan Kungl led off with a single and reached second after a misplayed grounder. With both runners in scoring position, sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier hit a double to score both runners. LeVier immediately scored off an RBI single by freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud for a 4-1 lead.
IVC added a run in the fourth cutting the Charger lead to two. Cypress got one back thanks to an RBI single by Foreman to score Avery who reached on a single.
In the bottom of the fifth, LeVier progressed through the bases. After being hit by a pitch, LeVier stole second, moved along to third on a ground-out, and then scored sliding into home thanks to a sacrifice fly by sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe.
Cypress added a run in the sixth. Sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente singled, reached second on a walk, and then scored off an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales. Cypress then blew the game open in the seventh with a two-run homerun by Hempe and a three-run homerun by Avery. The Chargers closed out the scoring in the eighth. Sophomore third baseman DC Legg drove in a run with a double and Avery cleaned out the bases with a two-run homerun.
Sophomore pitcher Ray Hanson earned the win improving to 5-0 after five innings of work. Sophomore reliever Gabriel Garcia came in to pitch two hitless innings.
Cypress (14-8, 6-4) has a day off before closing out its season series against IVC on Thursday. The Chargers will travel to Irvine Valley to take on the Lasers Thursday at 2:00 pm.
Cypress (13-8, 5-4) suffers its fourth straight loss. They have a few days to recover before returning home to host Irvine Valley. Cypress defeated the last place Lasers 8-0 the first time around. The Chargers will attempt to get back to winning Tuesday at Cypress at 2:00 pm.
