March 25, 2010

Final Stats

Irvine, Calif. - Cypress faced off against Irvine Valley for the third and final time this season hoping to complete the season sweep against the Lasers. After a competitive eight innings, the Chargers drove in six runs to finish off IVC in a 9-2 win. Sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe led the efforts with a grand slam.

The Chargers were able to score first thanks in part to an error which allowed lead-off hitter sophomore Jordan Foreman to reach second. Sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier drove in Foreman with a single up the middle for the 1-0 lead.

Cypress picked up two more in the second. With two runners in scoring position, Foreman drove in two for the 3-0 lead. IVC picked up two in the second cutting the Charger lead to one. Cypress’s defense held IVC scoreless after the second and the offense repeatedly failed to score stranding six runners in the next six innings.

The Chargers were holding a delicate one-run lead before taking control in the top of the ninth. After loading the bases, freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud walked in a run. Hempe followed with a grand slam clearing the bases. After an out and two singles, sophomore first baseman Stephan Kungl produced an RBI single to left center for the sixth run in the inning and the final ninth Charger run.

Sophomore pitcher Thomas Hoenshell (6-1) earned the win pitching eight innings and allowing just four hits. Sophomore Matt Rush pitched the ninth allowing just one hit.

Cypress (15-8, 7-4) heads into spring break and its annual trip to the central coast. The Chargers will start with Cuesta on Tuesday at Cuesta at 2:00 pm.
