Defensive Battle Leaves Cypress a Run Short

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Cypress made its annual trip up the coast for Spring Break and started the trip against Cuesta at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The Chargers held Cuesta to just two runs in the first but could not produced runs of their own in a 2-1 loss. Sophomore pitcher Gabriel Garcia held Cuesta scoreless through six innings striking out seven batters and allowing just one hit.
Cuesta got out quick with two runs in the first before Garcia came in to relieve. Cypress cut the Cuesta lead in half in the top of the second. After an error, sophomore third baseman DC Legg doubled to score a run which would become Cypress’s only run all day.
The Chargers’ last shot came in the ninth when sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe led off with a double and reached third after a sacrifice bunt. Cypress went down in two straight outs after that ending the comeback hopes. Cuesta’s defense made no mistakes after the second inning and Cypress proceeded to strand seven runners unable to score.
Freshman starter Vince Payne pitched in the first inning and suffered the loss falling to 1-3. Garcia held Cuesta scoreless in the next 6.1 innings. Sophomore Travis Garrett appeared for the final two outs striking out one and allowing no hits or walks.
Cypress (15-9) remains on the road tomorrow at Cal Poly SLO to take on Canyons tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
