Chargers Get Ahead in Defeat of Canyons

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Cypress continued its road trip Wednesday facing College of the Canyons for the first time this season. Cypress fell behind briefly but got ahead in the fifth on the way to a 6-2 win. Sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales led Cypress with two RBI on two hits.
The Chargers started with the lead in the first. Sophomore first baseman DC Legg got it going with a single and then stealing second. Morales brought him in with a single for the first run of the game. Canyons tied it up in the third with its first run and then got ahead 2-1 after a run in the fifth.
Cypress made sure to snatch the lead back quickly driving in three runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Legg singled to left to score two. Sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman scored from third on a stolen base play and the Chargers found themselves up 4-2.
Cypress used the seventh inning to add a couple insurance runs. After reaching on an error, Kungl scored off a triple from Foreman. Foreman then scored thanks to an RBI single by Morales for Cypress’s sixth and final run.
Sophomore starter Thomas Hoenshell earned the win pitching the first 7.2 innings and striking out six. Sophomore Matt Rush closed in the final 1.1 innings allowing no hits and striking out two.
Cypress (16-9) completes its road trip tomorrow taking on a historically tough Fresno City squad. The two meet in Cypress’s third straight game Thursday at noon at Cal Poly SLO.
