San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The Chargers closed their annual trip up the Coast Thursday taking on Fresno at Cal Poly SLO. Cypress’s offense failed to produce and committed four errors on the way to an 8-3 loss to the Rams. Sophomore right fielder Matt Avery scored two of Cypress’s three runs on the day.
After producing a triple in the first, Cypress stranded the runner there. Cypress came through in the second. Sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente led off with a single and moved to third off a single by sophomore centerfielder Erik Hempe. DeLaFuente scored off an RBI ground-out by freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud. The 1-0 Charger lead was brief as Fresno scored three in the bottom of the inning.
Fresno kept hammering away with three more in the fourth. Cypress was able to get a run scored in the top of the fifth. Avery reached on a fielder’s choice and then scored two batters later off an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales. Fresno came right back to match the run in the sixth and then another in the eighth.
Behind six runs, Cypress took their last shot in the ninth. Avery led off with a single followed by a single by sophomore first baseman Matt Waldrip. Morales hit a sacrifice fly to score Avery. The next two batters struck out leaving Cypress with the five run loss. Starter Travis Pitcher suffered the loss allowing three earned runs in 2.1 innings. He falls to 0-1.
Cypress (16-10) will take a week off before returning home for conference action. The Chargers will start up again Thursday at home against Fullerton. Cypress defeated Fullerton 13-8 earlier this year. The two face off again Thursday at Cypress at 2:00 pm.
