Cypress Wins Second Straight, Sweeps Fullerton

Fullerton, Calif. - The Chargers faced Fullerton in their final match-up the year Saturday afternoon. Cypress produced sporadic scoring to get ahead big and cut off a Fullerton rally for the 10-7 win. Cypress won all three of its games against Fullerton this year completing the sweep. Sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier led Cypress reaching in all five of his at bats including two doubles to score four runs.
The scoring started slowly for both teams. LeVier led off the second with a double, stole third, and scored off a single by sophomore left fielder Dimitri DeLaFuente. Fullerton matched the Charger run in the bottom of the inning to tie it up 1-1.
Cypress got ahead again in the third off a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales and an RBI single by freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud. Fullerton scored one more in the third but Cypress piled on three in the fifth. LeVier hit is second double of the day to score one followed by an RBI single by sophomore first baseman DC Legg. LeVier then scored from third off a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Erik Hempe giving Cypress the 6-2 lead.
The Hornets continued chipping away scoring one in the sixth. LeVier scored again in the top of the seventh off a single by Hempe to stay ahead by four. Cypress scored its final three runs in the eighth. Sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman singled and reached third off of two wild pitches then scored off a ground-out. LeVier immediately followed with a walk and Legg homered for two runs.
Cypress held a commanding 10-3 lead going into the bottom of the ninth but Fullerton kept it interesting scoring four runs but could not come all the way back. The Charger defense held strong making no errors for the first time in five games. Sophomore starter Thomas Hoenshell (8-1) put in 7.2 innings of work striking out nine.
Cypress (18-10, 9-4) heads into the toughest part of conference next after completing sweeps against last place Irvine Valley and seventh place Fullerton. Cypress is holding strong in second place and will get back into action Tuesday traveling to Riverside to take on the third place Tigers. Cypress defeated RCC 12-5 in a strong showing earlier this year. The two face off again Tuesday at Riverside at 2:00 pm.
