Riverside, Calif. - The Chargers headed to Riverside Thursday to face the Tigers in the first of a two-game series. After falling behind giving up a five run inning to the Tigers, Cypress chipped away taking the lead in the seventh and holding on for the 6-5 win. A loss by Santa Ana puts the Chargers just one game behind the first place Dons. Sophomore closer Travis Garrett held off the Tigers earning the save retiring the Tigers in order in the ninth.
Cypress scored first in the top of the second. Sophomore left fielder Dimitri DeLaFuente led off with a single and reached third after a single and a sacrifice bunt. Freshman catcher Tanner Perkins drove in DeLaFuente with a sacrifice fly. Riverside did all its damage in the bottom of the second as Cypress committed three errors. The Tigers scored five unearned runs putting the Chargers behind 5-1.
The Chargers worked to get ahead from there scoring three in the third. Freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud drove in a run with a single and DeLaFuente picked up an RBI ground out. Aanderud then scored off an error and Cypress was down by just one.
Cypress evened the score in the fourth. After sophomore third baseman Stephan Kungl doubled, sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales switched places with Kungl hitting a double for the tying run. After a few scoreless innings, sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier scored the go-ahead run with a lead-off solo homerun.
Sophomore reliever Gabriel Garcia (3-2) earned the win allowing just two hits and no runs in 3.1 innings while striking out six. Sophomore Matt Rush started for the Chargers. He pitched the first 4.2 innings allowing no earned runs.
Cypress (18-11, 9-5) has a day off before closing its season series against Riverside. The Chargers will host Riverside Thursday at 2:00 pm and go for a season sweep of the Tigers.
