Santa Ana, Calif. - Cypress tested its four game wins streak Tuesday challenging Santa Ana for a share of first in conference. The Chargers failed to grab a share of the lead giving up six runs in the sixth inning on the way to a 12-7 loss. The loss puts Cypress two games out of first with a rematch against the dons on Thursday.
Santa Ana struck first scoring an unearned run in the first. The Dons continued getting ahead by two after the second. Cypress got on the board in the third after sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales singled, stole second, and then scored off an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier.
Cypress evened the score in the fifth with a solo homerun by Morales to tie it up 2-2. The tie did not last long with the Dons scoring two in the bottom of the fifth. It fell apart for Cypress in the sixth with the Dons scoring six runs.
With eight runs to make up for, Cypress attempted to comeback starting in the seventh. Cypress scored a run off an error in the seventh to cut the deficit to seven. The Chargers pushed for four in the eighth. Sophomore leftfielder Dimitri DeLaFuente singled and reached second after an error on a fielder’s choice. A passed ball put two runners in scoring position and sophomore first baseman Ben Waldrip drove in the first with a single to right. Another run scored off of a passed ball and sophomore right fielder Matt Avery’s triple scored two.
Santa Ana added two in the bottom of the eighth and Cypress failed to produce a hit in the ninth resulting in the loss. Sophomore Ray Hanson (5-1) started pitching the first five innings striking out five and allowing four earned runs. Sophomore Gabriel Garcia pitched the final three innings striking out six.Cypress (20-10, 11-5) has a day off to prepare for its final meeting with Santa Ana. The Chargers will host the Dons Thursday at 2:00 pm.
