Cypress, Calif. - Cypress hosted Santa Ana Thursday to end the three game series between the two rivals. After splitting their first two games, the teams battled through twelve innings today with Santa Ana coming out on top 4-2. The pitching battle was highlighted by sophomore Thomas Hoenshell who pitched through nine innings striking out nine batters.
The Chargers took the first lead of the game scoring one in the first. Sophomore center fielder Jordan Foreman reached first on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud drove in Foreman with a single up the middle for the 1-0 lead.
Santa Ana tied it up with a run in the top of the third and then took the lead with a solo homerun in the fourth. After scoreless innings between the fifth and eighth, Cypress had its last shot to catch up in the ninth. Foreman singled and then advanced off a single by sophomore pinch hitter Matt Avery. Morales made it three hits in a row with a single to center to score Foreman and tie it up 2-2 to send the game to extra innings.
Both pitching staffs continued to be stingy in extra innings. Santa Ana put together a two out rally in the 12th to score two and take the 4-2 lead. Cypress needed to come through in the bottom of the inning but could not going down in order for the loss.
Sophomore closer Travis Garrett (0-3) suffered the loss for Cypress pitching the final three innings and striking out four.
Cypress (20-12, 11-6) falls three games behind Santa Ana now and has a day off before heading to Saddleback to take on the Gauchos. The Chargers lost to Saddleback 8-6 earlier this season. They face off again Saturday at Saddleback at noon.
