Cypress, Calif. - Cypress took on Saddleback Tuesday for the third and final time this season. The Chargers were playing to keep their hopes for an OEC Championship alive and to win the series against the Gauchos but came up short in a 14-6 loss. Santa Ana’s win today made the loss moot for Cypress in its hopes for another championship but the loss puts Cypress in a precarious position when it comes to playoff seeding and conference standing.
Cypress got on the board first scoring in the first thanks to a double by sophomore first baseman DC Legg who scored off an RBI single by freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud. Saddleback took the lead in the top of the second with two and then piled on four more over the next two innings to take the 6-1 lead after four.
The Chargers began to score again in the fifth thanks to solo homeruns by Legg and freshman third baseman Joey Boney. Saddleback continued to punish the Chargers scoring three in the sixth. Cypress answered with three starting with a solo homerun by sophomore centerfielder Erik Hempe. With two runners on, Boney drove in a run and then sophomore right fielder Matt Avery scored off a wild pitch to cut the Gaucho lead to three.
Saddleback drove in the nail with five runs in the eighth and ninth while Cypress failed to score. Sophomore starter Ray Hanson suffered the loss falling to 5-2.
Cypress (21-13, 12-7) will head into its final series of the regular season taking on Orange Coast in the first of two on Thursday. The Pirates defeated the Chargers 10-8 earlier this season. They face off again Thursday at 2:00 pm at Cypress in possibly the last Charger home game of the year.
