Final Stats

Costa Mesa, Calif. - The Chargers took on Orange Coast in the final regular season game of the year. Cypress gave up four late runs in a 14-11 loss to the Pirates. Sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe led Cypress with three RBI, two homeruns, and three runs scored.

OCC struck first taking a 4-0 lead after the first. Cypress almost caught up with three runs in the second starting with a solo homerun by Hempe. Sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman batted a run in with a single and a third run scored on an error.

Cypress took the lead in the third. Hempe singled to drive in a run and sophomore first baseman DC Legg drove in another for the 5-4 Charger lead. The Chargers built their lead in the fourth as sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier punched in a run with an RBI ground out. Freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud drove in the seventh run with a single giving Cypress a three run lead.

The lead disappeared in the sixth with five OCC runs in the sixth giving Cypress two runs to makeup. The Chargers did just that scoring two in the seventh to tie it up. With two runners in scoring position, Legg drove in both with a single tying it up at 9-9.

The Pirates got ahead again with a run in the bottom half but Cypress tied it up on its turn in the eighth thanks to Hempe’s second solo homerun. The fatal blow came in the bottom of the eighth as OCC punished Cypress driving in four runs. The Chargers’ needed to makeup four in the ninth but scored just one with a solo homerun by sophomore pinch hitter Dimitri DeLaFuente.

Sophomore starter Matt Rush pitched the first seven innings striking out six and allowing nine earned runs. Sophomore reliever Gabriel Garcia (4-2) suffered the loss.

Cypress (22-13, 13-6) has no time off as they finish the regular season tomorrow against Orange Coast again. The two will face off Friday at 2:00 pm at Orange Coast.
