Chargers Fall a Run Short in Game One Loss to Desert

Cypress, Calif. - The first round of Regionals began statewide Friday as the number seven seed Cypress took on the ten seed College of the Desert in game one of the best-of-three series. The Chargers started strong but faded narrowly losing to the Roadrunners 8-7. The loss will force Cypress to win two straight tomorrow over Desert in order to advance to Super Regionals. Cypress was led by sophomore third baseman Stephan Kungl who went three-for-four at the plate.
Cypress started with steady hitting including a lead-off double by sophomore shortstop Johnathan Morales. Morales scored from third off an RBI ground-out by freshman second baseman Bryan Aanderud. The Chargers added two in the second thanks to an RBI single by sophomore centerfielder Jordan Foreman and an RBI double by Kungl.
The Roadrunners erased the Charger lead in the third scoring three unearned runs tying it up 3-3. Desert took its first lead scoring in the fourth and extended with two more in the fifth jumping ahead 6-3. Cypress mitigated the damage with a run in the fifth. With a runner on third, sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe hit a sacrifice fly to cut the Desert lead to two.
Desert continued to hit with a run each in the sixth and seventh for eight runs. Cypress had four runs to makeup and was close in the seventh. Kungl led off with a single followed by a walk. Sophomore right fielder David Silvas scored Kungl with a double to left center followed by an RBI single to right by sophomore designated hitter Corey LeVier. Aanderud continued the scoring with an RBI sac bunt and Cypress found itself down just one after seven.
Cypress went down in order in the eighth and had its last shot in the bottom of the ninth. Morales led off with a double and advanced to second off a single by LeVier. With the tying run on second and just one out, Cypress hit into a double play ending its chances for a comeback.
Sophomore starter Thomas Hoenshell (10-2) suffered the loss pitching 5.2 innings, striking out five, and allowing four earned runs. Sophomore Gabriel Garcia relieved pitching two innings and allowing one earned run. Sophomore Travis Garrett closed and pitched a perfect 1.1 innings.
Cypress (22-15) will take on Desert in game two tomorrow at 11:00 am at Cypress. The Chargers must win two straight tomorrow in order to move on to super regionals. A loss will end their season.
