Charger Endurance Moves Cypress into the Super Regionals

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress was playing for its season Saturday afternoon taking on Desert in the best-of-three series after losing yesterday 8-7. The Chargers came through first surviving game one 13-5 and then winning the series in game two 12-4. The wins advance Cypress into the super regionals where they will play for a shot at the final four state championship tournament in Fresno.
The Chargers could not afford any mistakes Saturday but had a slow start in game one. Desert got ahead by three after two. Cypress erased the Desert lead with three in the fourth including a two-run homerun by sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe. Desert got ahead again with two in the fifth but Cypress took the lead with three in the sixth thanks to a couple Roadrunner errors. Cypress built on its lead with three in the seventh and four in the eighth to bury Desert 13-5 and force a game three.
Hempe led Cypress with four RBI in game one and had three hits including a double and a homerun. Sophomore right fielder David Silvas added three runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLafuente added two RBI including a homerun. Sophomore starter Ray Hanson (6-2) put in 8.2 innings of work striking out eight and allowing just four hits to earn the win.
Game three started about a half an hour after the end of game two. Cypress came out swinging and never looked back. The Chargers scored six in the first and by the top of the fourth, were up 10-0. Desert was able to score a couple in the middle innings but Cypress answered with two in the eighth. Desert scored a couple in the ninth but were nowhere near closing the gap.
Sophomore starter Matt Rush (4-1) racked up ten strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work for the win. Sophomore Gabriel Garcia followed with a hitless 1.2 innings striking out four. Cypress ended the game with 15 strikeouts. Hempe hit another homerun and ended the game with three more RBI. Freshman third baseman Joey Boney and DeLaFuente both picked up two RBI each.
Cypress (23-15) will have a week off to prepare for the Super Regional hosted by number five seed El Camino. Cypress will take on #13 seed Allan Hancock in game one of the tournament . Cypress split its two games against Hancock earlier this year. The two will face off Friday at El Camino.
