Torrance, Calif. - Cypress began its 18th straight Super Regional tournament Friday taking on Allan Hancock at El Camino in game one. The Chargers produced just one run and gave up four unearned runs on the way to the 5-1 loss to be bumped into the loser’s bracket. Sophomore pitcher Thomas Hoenshell (10-3) pitched the complete game for Cypress striking out three and allowing just one earned run.
The two started out by matching each other run for run. Hancock used a walk and a double to take the 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Cypress took the run right back with a solo homerun by sophomore left fielder Erik Hempe.
It fell apart for Cypress in the top of the fourth. After giving up a hit and three errors, Cypress fell behind 5-1. Cypress was close to scoring in the fifth and sixth but otherwise came up empty unable to make up the four run deficit on the way to the loss.
Cypress (24-15) will take on Palomar and needs to win three straight in order to advance to the State Tournament. A loss will end Cypress’s season. Cypress lost to Palomar 7-3 earlier this year.
