Torrance, Calif. - Cypress headed into day two of the Super Regionals Saturday and could not afford a loss after losing to Allan Hancock yesterday in game one. The Chargers survived their first game of the day defeating Palomar 6-5 before outhitting but losing to Allan Hancock 7-4. The Chargers finish their season 25-17 after stranding fifteen runners on base in their game against AHC.
Cypress traveled to the alternative site at LA Harbor to take on Palomar. The Chargers scored first with two in the second and two in the third including solo homeruns by sophomore first baseman DC Legg and sophomore centerfielder Erik Hempe. Palomar got on the board with a run in the third and kept going with a run each in the third fourth, fifth sixth and seventh for all five of their runs.
Cypress scored one in the sixth thanks to a solo homerun by freshman catcher Tanner Perkins. The teams were tied 5-5 after seven. Sophomore right fielder David Silvas scored the decisive run with a solo shot in the eighth. The Chargers’ four homeruns carried Cypress to the one-run win. Sophomore starter Matt Rush (4-1) struck out nine in seven innings to earn the win. Sophomore closer Travis Garrett earned his fourth save of the year pitching the final two innings allowing no hits and striking out two.
The win kept the Chargers alive and they moved on to take on Allan Hancock again that night at El Camino. The Bulldogs punished Cypress for seven runs in the first four to take a 7-0 lead. Cypress did not score until the fifth. Sophomore catcher Dimitri DeLaFuente singled, advanced around to third and then scored on a wild pitch.
The Chargers continued to strand runners but mounted a comeback attempt starting in the eighth. Silvas singled and then scored off an RBI fielder’s choice. Hempe belted a two-run homerun in the ninth but Cypress stranded three runners again to end its season. Cypress outhit the Bulldogs 16-9 but did not execute offensively to overcome AHC. Sophomore starter Ray Hanson suffered the loss striking out three in 3.2 innings to finish the season 6-4. Sophomore reliever Gabriel Garcia pitched the final 4.1 innings allowing just one hit and no runs striking out four.
Cypress finishes its season 25-17 and in ending its season in the super regionals for the third straight year.
