Cypress, Calif. - Cypress picked up right where it left off yesterday with another blowout victory over Golden West. The Chargers rolled to a 16-6 Orange Empire Conference win over the Rustlers at home on Friday. In its three victories this season, Cypress outscored Golden West 38-13, including a 28-8 margin the past two days.
The Chargers (15-10, 7-6) racked up 16 runs on 17 hits which included a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate by Arby Fields and a 3-for-5 afternoon by Joey Boney in which he scored five runs. Alonso Manuel chipped in with two hits and 3 RBI, while Jake Clark and Chase Harrison each drove in a pair of runs. Bryan Aanderud crossed the plate three times, while Dylan Fitzgerald and Fields each scored twice in the game.
Tommy Nance (2-0) picked up his second win of the year with an eight strikeout day in 6 2/3 innings of work. Nance only allowed one free pass to the Rustlers (11-15, 3-10) all day. Alex Pearson and Travis Pitcher came out of the bullpen secure the win for Cypress.
Cypress went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Boney singled, stole second and third, then came home on a throwing error by Golden West’s catcher, Donald Sneed.
The Rustlers tied it up in the third when Sneed came home on an RBI single by Zach Cardenalli, but the Chargers would answer back with six runs in the third, and five in the fourth to open up a 12-2 lead at the end of four innings.
In the third, Clark singled in Boney for the Chargers’ first run of the inning. Alonso followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to bring in Aanderud and Fitzgerald. Cypress scored two more runs when the Rustlers’ John Baccari let a single by Fields roll to the wall in left field, allowing Clark and Alonso to cross the plate. Fields would finish off the third inning scoring, when Harrison drove him in on a ground out to short.
After committing three errors the previous inning, Golden West’s defense became even more suspect in the fourth when the Rustlers allowed Cypress to stretch its lead to double digits when it put up five more runs on four hits and four errors.
Boney and Fitzgerald scored the first two runs for Cypress when Aanderud’s sacrifice bunt was mishandled by Golden West pitcher Garrett Overeem. Overeem then proceeded to make a bad throw to first when he tossed it over first baseman John Spirk’s head, allowing Boney to score. Spirk made matters worse for the Rustlers when he tried to throw Fitzgerald out at third and missed his target badly, allowing Fitzgerald to walk in and Aanderud to advance to third on the play.
The next man up, Clark, singled to bring in Aanderud for the third run of the inning. The Chargers scored twice more in the fourth when Fields doubled to left center, then came around to score on a single up the middle by Harrison. Shaw singled in Harrison to give the Chargers a comfortable 12-2 lead.
Golden West cut into Cypress’ lead with three runs in the top of the seventh, but the Chargers got two of those right back in the bottom half of the inning when Alonso drew a bases loaded walk that forced Boney in from third, and Fields singled in Aanderud to put the Chargers’ lead back to nine at 14-5.
The Chargers added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth after the Rustlers cut the lead to eight with a run in the top half of the inning. Boney drove in Tanner Perkins with a triple, then scored on a pinch-hit single up the middle by Anthony Razo.
The Chargers get back in action tomorrow when they play a non-conference game at Compton at 7 p.m., before getting back into OEC play with a home-and-away pair of games against Irvine Valley next week. On Tuesday, Cypress will head to South County to take on the Lasers at 2 p.m. The Chargers return home on Thursday to close out the season series with IVC in a conference matchup scheduled for 2 p.m.
