CYPRESS VS. FULLERTON VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
Cypress, Calif. -Cypress College finished off its 2011 regular season schedule with a 6-5 Orange Empire Conference victory over Fullerton College on Thursday. With the win, the Chargers solidified a fourth place finish in the final OEC regular season standings, as well as positioned themselves to have a good chance of receiving a playoff bid when the seedings are announced on Monday, May 2.
Joey Boney finished 2 for 5 with an RBI double and a run scored. Arby Fields also collected two hits including a triple and a run scored. Manny Alonso, Chase Harrison and Wade McConnon accounted for the other Cypress' scores. Bryan Aanderud chipped in with a hit and an RBI.
Cypress starting pitcher Tommy Nance (4-1) earned his fourth victory of the season after going five innings with four runs allowed (two earned). Reliever Jared Wilson continued to pitch well out of the pen with a solid four-inning performance to earn his third save of the year. Wilson allowed just one run on two hits to shut the door on the Hornets comeback attempt.
Boney got the Chargers an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when he singled to lead off the game, then advanced to second on a balk, moved over to third on a ground out, and finally scored on a passed ball by Fullerton starting pitcher Richard Lucas (2-5).
The Hornets tied the game in the second, but Cypress came right back to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Alonso came racing home on a bad throw by Fullerton to put the Chargers back on top 2-1.
In the third inning, Fullerton tied the game up again, but just like the last inning, the Chargers had an answer. Fields hit a one-out triple then trotted home on a balk to give Cypress a 3-2 edge over the Hornets.
Nance shut Fullerton down in the top of the fourth, then Cypress opened up a four-run lead with a three-run rally in the bottom of the inning. Harrison drew a leadoff walk to start things off, then moved to second on a single up the middle by McConnon. A bunt single by Anthony Razo loaded the bases for the Chargers, then Harrison came in to score when Brad Hartong grounded into a double play. Boney followed with an RBI double down the leftfield line to score McConnon from third, and Aanderud singled through the right side to plate Boney and stretch Cypress' lead to 6-2.
Fullerton cut the gap to 6-4 with two runs in the fifth, and was looking for more in the sixth inning when Drew Luther walked to lead off the inning. Head coach Scott Pickler decided to make a move to the bullpen and called out Jared Wilson to shut down the Hornets. Wilson did just that when he got the first hitter to fly out, before inducing Tommy Endres to ground into a double play.
The Hornets put together a pair of hits to score their only run off of Wilson, and the Chargers held on for a 6-5 victory and secured a fourth place finish in the OEC standings. Cypress is now in a good position to earn a bid to the playoffs.
