About Professor Johnson
Welcome. I want to give you just to give you a brief history of what brought me here to Cypress College.
While in my first two years at the University of North Carolina- Greensboro, I was quite undecided about my major taking random classes to try to discover what was going to be a fit for me. I realized that much of what I loved was teaching young people in different capacities. I had worked two summers as a camp counselor and one with the Headstart program. Elementary Education seemed like a fun option for that time in my life.
My area of concentration was Social Studies which required one Psychology class. My father had wanted me to major in Psychology; however, I took that one Psychology and hated it! I hope you will have a much better experience in your first class than I did!
I graduated with a B.A. in Education and went on to teach 5th graders full time, 6th, 7th and 8th graders full time and substituted every grade K-12 including Special Ed classes while working on my Master’s degree.
My life introduced me to the sexuality field and I have never been quite the same! I began 20+ years ago in North Carolina with Dr. Paul Fleming a gynecologist and sex therapist, doing individual, couple and group counseling, community education and professional training. Upon relocating to California, I realized I needed to pursue higher education to continue in the field. I researched graduate programs in Psychology and took my first class at Pepperdine’s Orange County Campus. My father would be pleased if he were living that I finally fell in love with the field of Psychology!
I graduated from Pepperdine University with an M.A. in Clinical Psychology. After graduating, I was asked by the Dean to teach the Human Sexuality and Sex Therapy class to students studying to be Marriage and Family Therapists. I have been at Pepperdine for 11 years as an adjunct faculty member. In addition, as part of my training, I counseled patients at Planned Parenthood in Mission Viejo and clients at the Riskin-Banker Psychotherapy Center specializing in Sex Therapy.
Outside of academia, I enjoy being at the beach with my dogs and dancing ballet. I bike some and love nature. As a spectator, I really enjoy hockey and college basketball. I was born in North Carolina; loving college basketball is state mandated there!
Teaching is my passion and I am thrilled to be part of such an outstanding department here at Cypress College. I teach the following courses: Human Sexuality, Applied Psychology, General Psychology and Elementary Classroom Teaching and hope you will consider taking some of our Psychology courses. And even if you don’t fall in love with Psychology, it is a very rich field with much to offer to your life!
